About Me

Hello, my name is Chris Coates-Mitchell, owner of Chris Coates Photos!

I'm originally from Atlanta, GA, but moved to NYC at 21 to pursue my love of dance. I have 20 years of professional dance experience, including performing all across the globe on cruise ships, in dance companies, and with dance conventions/workshops. For the past 15 years, I've taught at The Joffrey Ballet School/Summer Intensives and for 20 years I've been a judge, staff, and master teacher at Onstage NY and NYCDA.

My love of dance has helped inform and inspire my love of photography. Being able to take my dance training into the photography world and combine my two passions has been a dream come true. I've been lucky enough to shoot at world renowned locations such as The Joyce Theatre, The Juilliard School, The Alvin Ailey Citigroup Theatre, and many more. My photography has been featured in Vogue.com, Playbill, BroadwayWorld, Roundabout Theatre, and others.

I truly enjoy capturing "the moment". The dancer in me always strives for perfection and that carries over in my photography.  Collaborating with performers is a passion of mine and I love working with other passionate performers to create magic in front of the camera. Whether it's dance portraits, headshots, performance and beyond, I try to bring the precise detail and focus that dance has taught me into each image.
